KFI gets in the saddle

Strengthened by the experience gained alongside other major companies in the Motor Valley, KFI accompanied the customer company in the streamlining of the assembly of two of its flagship vehicles, optimizing the picking process from line supermarkets.

The needs of the motorcycle manufacturer

The development

Before KFI’s intervention, the picking process was managed by 3 employees who worked on 330 codes, guided by multiple paper lists.

The customer expressed the need to digitize the process through an instrument capable of coordinating multiple operators active simultaneously on separate lists. In particular, the company requested the introduction of a flexible and easily reprogrammable system able of:

  • reduce (quantitative and qualitative) picking errors;
  • increase the pick rate;
  • improve ergonomics (hands-free picking);
  • speed up the operator training phase.

The KFI solution

Green light for the pick to light

The solution implemented by KFI has made it possible to streamline the picking of components from line supermarkets and to increase their accuracy thanks to the wireless Pick to Light display, which ensures rapid identification of locations and quantities to be picked up.

Thanks to the implementation of Spark – KFI’s software platform – which made it possible to manage and integrate SpeedyPick Air luminous devices which, by means of a semiotics based on a combination of coloured lights and flashes, allow several operators to simultaneously locate the components and confirm pick ups by pressing buttons.

The results

Productivity rears up

The process, redesigned by KFI and the customer’s management, in combination with the proposed technologies integrated with the information system, has allowed a marked improvement in the ergonomics of the operators, which can now carry out completely hands-free picking.

This triggered a sharp acceleration of activities, accompanied by a marked decrease in errors. There was also a marked change in gear in the training times of the new employees, which dropped from 4 days to around 4 hours. Less than a free practice session!
